This Week’s Magic: 5/10-5/16

A Taurus new moon, a nine month Vesta visit, and permission to serenade yourself

Just in case you don’t feel like listening, here’s the transcript.

Hey, welcome back! This is This Week’s Magic, your weekly astrological weather report. I’m Shereen, and this is the forecast for the week of May 10th.

Quick shoutout to all the moms out there because Mother’s Day kicks off the week and the Sun sextile Jupiter today is genuinely one of the best aspects of the month. Warm, nourishing, easy. If last week felt heavy, today is the universe’s way of saying good job, you made it. Enjoy the day.

Now let’s get into the rest of the week because it’s a good one.

The overall vibe

Last week asked you to go inward, sit with some hard stuff, and release what wasn’t serving you anymore. This week is what comes after that. There’s a lightness here, a clarity, a sense of okay, I think I know what I want to do with this. The energy is more open, more talkative, more ready to move. We’re building toward one of the more uplifting new moons of the year on Saturday, and the whole week feels like it’s pointing in that direction.

Mercury sextile Jupiter — Tuesday May 13th

Tuesday, Mercury sextiles Jupiter in Cancer and the mental energy opens up beautifully. Mercury is how we think and communicate. Jupiter expands whatever it touches. When they work together like this, ideas feel bigger, conversations feel easier, and you might find yourself genuinely excited to share what’s been brewing in your mind since last week’s processing.

This is a good day to have the conversation you’ve been thinking about, pitch the idea, write the thing, reach out to someone you’ve been meaning to connect with. The words are there and they’re landing well.

One gentle caution though. Jupiter’s expansiveness can tip into overpromising. Mercury sextile Jupiter is optimistic energy, which is wonderful, but don’t let the good vibes talk you into committing to more than you can actually deliver. Share the idea, yes. Sign the contract in blood, maybe wait a day.

Sun conjunct Mercury — Wednesday May 14th

Wednesday the Sun conjuncts Mercury and this one feels like clarity arriving right on time. The Sun is your identity, your sense of self, your vitality. Mercury is your mind, your voice, how you process. When they meet, your thoughts and your sense of self are fully aligned. What you think is what you are right now, and that’s actually a powerful place to speak from.

If something has been coming into focus over the last few days, Wednesday is a good day to articulate it. Write it down, say it out loud, let it become real.

A sidebar: Who is Vesta?

On Tuesday the 13th, an asteroid called Vesta moves into Aries, and I want to take a moment to introduce her properly because she deserves it.

Vesta is one of the four major asteroids used in astrology alongside Ceres, Juno, and Pallas. In mythology she’s the goddess of the sacred flame, the keeper of the hearth. The Vestal Virgins in ancient Rome were her priestesses, women who tended the eternal flame and kept it burning. Their devotion was total and their role was considered essential to the wellbeing of the entire city.

In your chart, Vesta represents what you tend with focused, sacred dedication. Where your devotion lives. What you return to again and again because it matters to you at a soul level. She’s not flashy. She’s not about expansion or ambition. She’s about the quiet, consistent tending of what is sacred to you personally.

For what it’s worth, I have Vesta in Virgo in my 9th house, which is basically astrology’s way of saying I will learn something in great detail and then teach it to you thoroughly. Which, hi, here we are.

Now, Vesta usually spends about 8 to 10 weeks in a sign. But every few years she has a long stay somewhere, and this is one of those times. Vesta enters Aries on May 13th and doesn’t leave until February 16th, 2027. That’s almost nine months. We haven’t had a visit this long since 2015, and before that 1997. So this is not a regular Vesta transit. This is a significant one.

Aries is the sign of self, independence, courage, initiation, personal mission. With Vesta in Aries for nine months, the sacred flame is being directed inward. What are you devoted to when it comes to yourself? Your own becoming, your own desires, your own path? This is a long invitation to tend that flame with the same dedication you might give to everyone and everything else in your life. What is sacred to you, not to anyone else, just to you?

We’ll come back to Vesta throughout her stay in Aries because nine months is a long time and a lot will unfold.

A sidebar on Sabian Symbols

Before we get to the New Moon I want to quickly explain what Sabian Symbols are because I’ve been referencing them and they deserve a proper introduction.

The Sabian Symbols are a set of 360 symbolic images, one for each degree of the zodiac. They were created in 1925 when astrologer Marc Edmund Jones worked with a clairvoyant named Elsie Wheeler. They sat in a San Diego park for a day, and Wheeler channeled a symbolic image for each of the 360 degrees of the zodiac, one at a time, on index cards so she couldn’t see patterns or build on previous images. The result is this extraordinary collection of images that astrologers have been interpreting and working with ever since.

There’s one important technical note. When we use Sabian Symbols, we always round up to the next whole degree. So if a planet is at 25 degrees and 57 minutes, we use the symbol for 26 degrees, not 25. Always round up.

They don’t replace traditional astrology interpretation but they add a layer of imagery and texture that can be surprisingly precise. When a symbol resonates with what’s actually happening in someone’s life, it can feel a little uncanny. I find them endlessly fascinating.

New Moon in Taurus at 26 degrees — Saturday May 16th

Okay, the main event. Saturday we have a New Moon in Taurus at 25 degrees 57 minutes, which rounds up to 26 degrees, and the Sabian Symbol for that degree is a Spaniard serenading his señorita.

I love this image for this moon. It follows the symbol for 25 degrees Taurus which is a large well-kept public park, collective enjoyment, shared space. And now we move from the collective into something personal, intimate, creative. Someone standing outside a window, pouring their desire and creativity into a serenade for someone they want. It’s not practical. It’s not efficient. It’s pure creative self-expression in service of something that matters to your heart.

This New Moon is also beautifully supported by the sky. It’s conjunct Uranus at 1 degree Gemini, conjunct Mercury at 28 degrees Taurus, and sextile Jupiter in Cancer. That’s a lot of supportive energy for a new moon. The ideas are there, the optimism is there, the spark of something unexpected is there.

But here’s how I want you to actually work with this energy, and I want to go a little deeper than just set your intentions.

Taurus rules the body, pleasure, sensuality, the physical world, what makes you feel safe and grounded. And there’s something important about that right now. Think about the chakra system for a second. The root chakra, at the base of your spine, is your foundation. Safety, security, belonging. The sacral chakra, just above it, is your pleasure center and your creative wellspring. And here’s the thing: if your root chakra is depleted, if you don’t feel safe or grounded, the sacral chakra doesn’t have enough energy to do what it’s meant to do. You can’t create freely from a place of fear.

So this New Moon, before you write your intentions and light your candles, ground yourself first. Do something that makes you feel safe and taken care of. Make yourself a beautiful dinner. Draw a long bath with the good bubble bath you’ve been saving. Pour into yourself. Not as a reward, as a foundation.

Then from that grounded, nourished place, do something creative and joyful. Make something. Express something. Let yourself want something and move toward it like the Spaniard with his guitar, unashamed, fully present, in service of desire.

That’s the best place to manifest from.

The verdict

This is a week of clarity, optimism, and creative momentum. The processing is done. The fog has lifted. Let the ideas flow on Tuesday and Wednesday, tend your own sacred flame as Vesta moves into Aries, and by Saturday pour yourself into something creative and joyful from a place of feeling genuinely taken care of.

Closing

That’s your magic for the week. Now go make some more. And next week I’m back with what’s coming as we move through this beautiful Taurus new moon energy and what’s building in the sky. See you soon!
